Corona Light Shoots Spot for New Global Campaign in Colombia
Double Oscar-Nominee Dante Spinotti is Director of Photography
Colombia’s Tribu Internacional provided production services and Argentina’s Landia produced the commercial in June for Corona Light’s new global ad campaign. The new spot was filmed on two 35 mm cameras (with backup from high definition cameras) on the paradisiacal beaches of the Tayrona National Park located along Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The London daily The Guardian ranks these beaches among the top ten in the world. This is the brand’s first spot made outside Mexico and the crew was more than 80% Colombian.
“They chose the beach for its wild, paradisiacal quality, and for the blue Caribbean waters in keeping with the product’s image,” confirmed Carlos Hernandez, Colombian director and gaffer for Dante Spinotti, famed DP nominated twice for an Academy Award for work on films such as L.A. Confidential (Curtis Hanson), Red Dragon (Brett Ratner) and The Last of the Mohicans (Michael Mann) to name only a few. Spinotti was flown to Colombia exclusively for the shoot, given his expertise in filming day-for-night scenes. “Technical requirements were quite demanding since several scenes shot during the day had to resemble night. It was a huge logistic effort given the conditions of the location, which is quite removed and had no electricity. We had to haul several generators in order to connect the 150,000 watts of lights used during shooting and they had to be installed 200 meters from the beach where shooting was going on, which meant laying down a lot of cable,” added Carlos Hernandez.
The spot of was directed by Argentine Agustin Alberdi, one of the best known directors on the Hispanic market, who also directed music videos for Babasónicos and a viral campaign Stella Artois London. Spot producers Landia, an agency with headquarters in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Los Angeles (USA) and Madrid (Spain), have positioned themselves as one of Latin America’s most innovative agencies and are among the world’s ten most “winning” producers with a Golden Palm from Cannes and a Gunn Report award.
Colombian pioneers Tribu Internacional led by Zulu Keuning specialize in production services for international clients shooting TV commercials, documentaries and music videos. Their team of English, German and Spanish-speaking professionals have worked for clients such as Sony, Visa, Coca Cola, Intel, Microsoft, Orange, Philips, Heineken and many others. They collaborated with producers Landia to pull off the Mexican beer commercial, bringing in nearly 100 actors and models from LA, Argentina, Mexico and Colombia and coordinating a joint effort with the country’s largest equipment rental houses to supply the enormous amount of lights needed. “Above all, it was a huge test of our national team’s ability to pull off a large-scale shoot, -- which we passed with flying colors – and an incredible learning experience to watch someone like the great Dante Spinotti at work,” concluded Hernandez.
