“The Two Escobars,” a Documentary about Colombia, Screens in Major Festivals
90-minute documentary reveals the connection between the deaths of soccer star Andrés Escobar and drug trafficker Pablo Escobar
After being selected for the Cinéma de la plage category at the Cannes Festival and screening at the Tribeca Film Festival, the US documentary The Two Escobars directed by brothers Jeff and Michael Zimbalist continues its progress through international festivals. The documentary tells how, during the period in Colombia’s history when the country was caught in a war between cartels and became the world leader in homicides, the national soccer team was saddled with the responsibility of creating a new image for the country. The team’s rise to glory, as sudden as it was mysterious, placed it among the world’s best after decades of obscurity. Two men were behind this success: the two Escobars, Andres, the team’s captain and icon, and Pablo, notorious drug lord and inventor of the “narco-soccer” phenomenon. But while everyone was waiting for Colombia to rise to the double challenge, winning the 1994 World Cup and transforming its international image, the murder of Andres Escobar dashed the nation’s hopes. From glory to tragedy, The Two Escobars is a valiant investigation into the heart of the secret marriage between sports and crime and reveals surprising links between the murders of Andres and Pablo.

Michael Zimbalist (left) y Jeff Zimbalist

Jeff and I fell in love with Colombia several years ago when we set out to develop a feature-length fiction film based on the true story of the first Peace Community in Urabá, Colombia. Since then, we’ve tried to remain as close as possible to the country, both in our work and in our daily lives. In “The Two Escobars”, we not only worked with a film crew comprised of mostly Colombians; Jeff and I also rented an apartment in Medellín where we spent almost half of last year… Now that production on “The Two Escobars” is over, Jeff and I are getting back to the feature film. It’s a real pleasure to continue to work in Colombia and, especially, to be able to tell another moving story (like the story of Andrés Escobar’s life): the story of the first Peace Community. We feel it’s important to present Colombian stories that tell the truth about this country; not just drug trafficking, violence, guerrillas and all the negative stuff that usually shows up in the media.

Michael Zimbalist, co-director “The Two Escobars”
